From the Garonne to the Canal du Midi, and from Saint Sernin to the Cité
de l´Espace, the many different faces of Toulouse invite visitors to come on a
journey of discovery.
So accept the invitation offered and come to Toulouse as a pilgrim to its numerous
churches, a student of the history of art (or simply an art enthusiast) to its
museums and galleries, a navigator on the Garonne, and an expert on heavenly bodies
to the Cité de l´Espace.
And then, content and overwhelmed with what you have seen, join our other guests
in having just one final wish - to come back soon.
Heritage Treasures
Ever since the Garonne offered the hospitality of its river banks to the Tectosages,
the city of Toulouse has, with the passing centuries, become home to a growing
collection of monuments, fine edifices and works of art, which stand as witnesses
of its diverse culture and stimulate the curiosity of its visitors.
Listen, observe, Toulouse is a city proud of its past history which is all around
you
Museums
The Toulouse museums have moments of intense pleasure in store for those who
are moved by the joy of discovery. Many of them are in superb buildings and
their collections present a wide range of different facets of History. Real
History. The History of Man, of Art, of different cultures. Recently the ‘Abattoirs’,
a gallery devoted to modern and contemporary art, has opened in beautiful buildings
created in the 19th century by Urbain Vitry, a powerful and enriching addition
to an already captivating and seductive array of museums and galleries.
So spoil yourself, give in to the temptation!
Toulouse, the Lighting Plan
Inaugurated on 19 November, the Lighting Plan is an ambitious, original project.
It uses the latest lighting technology to give Toulouse a new night-time face,
enhancing the beauty and variety of its heritage: a graphic staging of the city,
its districts, bridges and monuments. Toulouse, pink city by day, city of light
by night.
The lighting is designed to highlight the wealth of detail on each building
and as you walk around the city, offers a new way of looking at its architecture.
A night-time staging of the urban landscape, which adds to the heady atmosphere
of Toulouse “by night”, already rich in dynamic life. As night falls,
historic monuments, modern architecture, districts and rivers are transformed
into tableaux that combine to create a monumental urban fresco.
Air and space tourism
From its very beginnings Toulouse has contrived to combine tradition and innovation,
past and future, an ability that is well demonstrated by its position as home
to the world’s second largest space centre and Europe’s leading
centre for aeronautics. Toulouse it was, also, that saw the birth of airmail
services with pioneers such as Mermoz and Saint-Exupéry.
You can enjoy the thrilling story of aviation and its development on a tour
of the Airbus A330 and A340 assembly lines, at the Cité de l´Espace with
its interactive displays and presentations, and on a behind-the-scenes tour
of Toulouse international airport with Touch´and Go.
